Tonga Hospital is the best place to do one's community service.
We have 6 Comm Serve doctor posts as well as OT, Physio, Speech and Hearing, Dietetics, Radiography, Pharmacy, Environmental Health and Nursing community service posts.
The balance of senior supervision and professional independence leads to our junior doctors becoming confident in a number of spheres.
The hospital opened in 1999 in Tonga Village in the Nkomazi district of Mpumalanga near the Komati river.
The hospital residence boasts 56 face brick houses for staff and single quarters rooms with en-suite showers for students.
We are in the Wild Frontier Tourist Region of the Eastern Mpumalanga Lowveld; perfectly positioned for day trips into Swaziland, Mozambique, Kruger National Park and for scenic drives along the escarpment; Sabie, Graskop etc.
The varied wildlife, stunning scenery, interesting cultures and warm Mozambique current with its tropical fish make for memorable weekend getaways.
We have mild winters and hot summers; 30+ celsius. Malaria is not prevalent in the vicinity of the hospital, so our staff do not take malaria prophylaxis. A mosquito bednet in summer is useful though.
Come join us in this challenging and exciting adventure of practising rural medicine in an African context.
add:To be rather informed is one of the requirements you need to have before you decide on the country to visit and to get the needed services. It is one of the steps to better choose the country for your needs, you need to check the state health web sites to see the latest medical tourism statistics on the services used and on the countries visited to get the needed health services. You need just to use the services of just qualified doctors.
“Working in Tonga has been an incredible experience. You quickly gain great skills and confidence in managing a huge range of conditions, with the knowledge that advice is at hand if you need it. The accommodation is comfortable, and the setting with Mozambique, Swaziland and the Kruger nearby means that weekends are quickly packed. The staff and patients are welcoming and you’ll soon feel you are a part of this community. Give it a try, it’ll be hard to leave.” July 2012 Dr Andrew McCallum - Scotland

From Gauteng it takes about 5 hours by car, Drive along the N12/N4 until just after Malelane then follow Jeppes Reef signs to the R570. Turn left at One Tree Hill onto D 797; the sign says "Tonga Kamhlushwa", then you will find Tonga just after the Komati River Bridge 20 mins later. Turn right at the Total/Nkomazi Fuel and Oil 4 way stop. We are 1km further on the left.
Public transport: Greyhound (www.greyhound.co.za) , Intercape (www.intercape.co.za), Translux and City to City buses all stop in Malelane. They leave daily from Park Station in Johannesburg. Budget 7 hours travelling time. Malelane is 35 mins from Tonga by car. City Bug can take people from Joburg International Airport to Nelspruit but one needs to book well in advance and it is not that easy to get to Malelane from where the City Bug stops.
